Fuming is a finishing/colouring process using ammonia which reacts with the tannin in the wood to darken the grain. Oak has a high tannin content so the process works really well and produces beautiful rich dark tones. Depending on the duration of exposure Oak turns from beige/brown to a rich chocolate brown/black colour.
