With a background in construction and engineering, Peter Bielenberg is currently the managing director of Arc-Eye Welding and Fabrication LTD and works creating bespoke products for the domestic and commercial market.
Since completing the Fetac level 5 Art and Sculpture course with distinction in 2013 he has developed a passion for working with wood and woodturning.
During this time, he set about either making or buying the tools of the trade for his newfound passion, woodturning. He now has a number of lathes and a sawmill to enable him to create his unique artwork. Peter carries out every stage of the process from milling and processing the greenwood, carving, turning, drying, and finishing each product.
Peter is a self-taught woodturner and has honed his skills through hours of turning in his spare time. This time spent turning enabled him to learn the unique characteristics of the species of wood he chooses for his projects.
Peter creates unique wood turned sculptural hollow forms and vessels to the highest quality and his pieces reside in private collections the length and breadth of Ireland and beyond.

Inspirations
Peter is inspired by the wood itself, a dynamic organic material that is often overlooked as a building material or firewood.
It is such a beautiful material to work with. Peter believes it is worth giving the raw wood a new life almost as a mark of respect to the tree itself, challenging and pushing the limits of the wood to create sculptural form and design.

Materials and Process
Wood is such a dynamic material and it would be impossible to approach every project in the same way due to wood’s organic nature.
Turning wet freshly cut wood like Oak retains a lot of strength even when turned to a thin wall. Allowing materials such as these to slow dry helps form the piece naturally, and it is often these pieces that take on a life of their own with added natural curves and texture.
Peter particularly enjoys turning woods such as Oak, Beech, Ash, Holly, Yew, and Elm. Each wood is different in its characteristics. From grain structure, density, elasticity, and movement drying, each characteristic poses its unique challenges. The more he understands these intricacies the more he finds enjoyment in his craft.
